Search for a neutron electric dipole moment

Description

Neutron electric dipole moments provide an extremely sensitive probe for CP violating physics beyond the Standard Model. A new result from the PSI based nEDM experiment has recently been published, giving a null result of d_n = (0.0 ± 1.1 ± 0.2)x10^-26 ecm, which can be interpreted as a new upper bound of 1.8x10^-26 ecm (90% CL) on the neutron EDM. The result benefits from a factor of 5 improvement in the systematic uncertainty, achieved through a rigorous understanding of the magnetic field environment in the apparatus. A new experiment is under construction at PSI, n2EDM, which strives to improve the overall nEDM sensitivity by another order of magnitude.
