Description

Particle detectors have long been at the forefront of electronics technology, with silicon-based solid-state detectors playing a pivotal role in the latest generation of high-energy physics experiments. Recent advancements in sensor technology and fast electronics have enabled not only precise position measurements of particles traversing detectors but also the ability to measure their time of passage with resolutions better than tenths of picoseconds (4D tracking). In this seminar, I will introduce the fundamental concepts of solid-state particle detectors, with a particular focus on fast timing detectors. Furthermore, I will illustrate how these detectors are applied in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), as well as their utilization in space exploration and medical physics.
