Abstract: The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider is a substantial upgrade of the B factory facility at the Japanese KEK laboratory. The ambitious goal of this project is an increase of the integrated luminosity by about a factor 50 compared to its predecessor within the next decade. This will yield unprecedented precision to explore flavour physics with $B$ or charmed mesons as well as $\tau$ leptons. Belle II has also a unique capability to search for low mass dark matter and low mass mediators. A key element of the upgrade is a largely increased instantaneous luminosity by exploiting the so-called nano-beam scheme in which the colliding beams will eventually be focussed to 50 nm in the vertical direction. In this presentation, I will present the current status of the project.
